Daruma Statue from Shigaraki Japan. This was made by Rian1, A very famous Japanese Shigaraki Potter from the late 19th Century. The Daruma is signed by Rian 1 and dates between 1898-1920. Rian 1 also was the creator of the first Ceramic Tanuki in Shigaraki , ( Good fortune Badgers you see in front of Noodle shops all over Japan). A piece of paper with 'Mariya'-Mary-written in 'Katakana'-angular Japanese characters often used for loanwords-was attached on the back of the Kannon. Christianity was banned during this time in Japan, so one may assume the Kannon was a camouflage for the owner, a secret follower of the religion.
