Buddhist Zen temple fish gong.
Wooden gongs like this were used to let the monks know when it was time to complete tasks. They can have more elaborate carving,(Like the one hanging in the Gardner museum) but this one is from a country temple in Shiga and very simple. Great Mingei piece with original hammer.

Japanese 19th C. monks Nyoi,(Scepter) usually used by the abbot during Buddhist ceremonies and sermons.
The writing on the staff translates to "All things are essentially empty So there's nothing to be obsessed with." The carved wooden scull represents the concept of emptiness, impermanence and the transitory nature of life.
