A small Granite stone Oribe Lantern.

Oribe style lanterns were invented by a tea master Furuta Oribe in the 16th century to be used to light up the gardens surrounding the tea huts.
There is a small carving of Jizo-Bosatsu (a praying monk) on the bottom piece which was also said that hidden christians secretly worshipped the image as the Christ or the Virgin Mary when the government banned Christianity. Therefore it is also referred as Maria Lantern or Christian Lantern.

The base is directly planted in the ground, and a square canopy topped with the jewel form (houju).

Size (as planted in the ground) : H 3'5" (104cm), Canopy piece 13"x13" (33cmx33cm)
+ approx. 6-8" (15-20cm) buried in the ground.
